Arrived at the Gotel das Cataraces which is situated in front of the Water Falls. We took a breathtaking walk to the Falls. There are 2 main sections composed of hundreds of waterfalls, the highest of which is 64 meters (210 feet). The spectacle of 2.5 miles of torrential down pour with some cataracts thundering down 210 feet to the basin is nothing short of hypnotic. The clouds of spray, the incessant roar and the surrounding luxuriant tropical growth contributes to make this a true natural wonder. This Inguacu River provides a natural boundary between Argentina-Brazil-Paraguay.

For the afternoon the adventurous Macho Safari (jeep and exciting boat ride to the falls) took place. Riding the boat into the falls was thrilling and exciting.

March 29, 1995: Three days in Argentina.  Leaving Inguassu Falls via Varig Airlines and arriving at Buenos Aires

After arrival transferred to the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel with the balance of the day at leisure, we took a walking tour to acquaint ourselves with the city.

ARGENTINA: Country of South America. It was a Spanish colony from 1620 until independence was proclaimed in 1866. Since 1929 the military have intervened in the government, a move that paved the way for the rest of Col. Juan Peron (President 1945-55 and 1973-74).  Argentina is among the most developed Latin American countries. The fertile pampas and sheep ranches of Patagonia provided most of the exports.

BUENOS AIRES: Capital of Argentina. Buenos Aires means the "Silvery Land" with reference to its rivers and lakes. Chief Port and the largest city of Argentina at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata. Situated at the edge of the pampas, an intensely cultivated region. It is one of the world's busiest ports. It is also one of the most heavily industrialized cities in South America. It was founded in 1536 by Spanish colonists and has been capital since 1862.

Departed for city tour. The local guide focused on the city's landmarks including the Plaze de Mayo, where the President's Pink House is located and the Metropolitan Mausoleum, historic Santelme, the oldest neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, the Ornate Colon Opera House and the elegant district of Recoleta including Eva Peron. Dinner was followed by a night club revue, featuring Latin America's sensuous Tango, a thrilling performance by native Gauchos in Casablanca Theatre.

March 31, 1995: An excursion to the pampas ( a nearly treeless grassland area of South America chiefly in east-central Argentina and Uruguay). Fiesta Gaucho Tour: It was an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of Argentina country life with a drive out into the Pampas. At the resort we were received by Gauachos. There we enjoyed the folklore music and dance entertainment by Gaucho ranch hands and witnessed the horse parades and gamed. I went horseback-riding around the property for half an hour and then returned to the hotel.

April 01, 1995: Four days in Chile. Leaving Buenos Aires via Chile Airlines and arriving at Santiago.

CHILE: A long narrow country on the western seaboard of South America. The Spaniards colonized it from 1541 and the country declared its independence in 1818. Chile has large energy resources; oil & gas. The fertile central valley is its economic heartland.

SANTIAGO: Capital of Chile and of Santiago province. It is on the Mapocho River and was founded by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Vildivia in 1541. Greater Santiago contains nearly a third of Chile's population and provides half of the nation's total industrial outputs. It is situated in the center of the country and perched between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes. It is no wonder that Santiago has evolved as the country's political, commercial and cultural capital.

Transferred from the Airport to Sheraton Hotel & Towers. After leisure in the afternoon, we went out to the Chilean Folklore Dinner Show. With dinner we enjoyed a Pisco Sour & the famous wines of Chile and the show. The show featured the regional music and dance of country and the Easter Islands.

April 02, 1995: Departed for Santiago City Tour. During the tour we visited La Moneda, the official Government Palace the beautiful Club Hipico Racetrack, O'Higgin's Park, commemorating the country's first president; San Critobal Hill with its landmark statue of the Virgin Mart-- a gift from France to Chile and the main square-- Plaze de Armas and the relic filled Cathedral. We witnessed Change of Guards between 11:00 am to 12 noon in front on the President's Palace.

April 03, 1995: Today chic resorts and historical ports. Visited Vina del Mar and Valparaiso-- a beautiful scenic drive through vineyards and Chile's finest coastal areas. The chic resort with its a spectacular coastal line palm tree-lined avenues and unique homes truly deserves its name " the Pearl of the Pacific". Tonight the Tour Director hosted a fabulous Farewell Dinner Party to those visitors returning to Miami from Chile, not taking part to the Peru Extension. We cheered the "CIAO".

April 04, 1995: Four days stay in Peru. Leaving Santiago via Aero Peru Airlines and arriving at Lima.

PERU: Republic of western South America. It rises from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes. Conquered by the Spanish (1533) who destroyed its Inca civilization. It regained its independence in 1824. It has considerable mineral resources.

LIMA: Capital of Peru, founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizario. It is now an industrial center and the site of oil-refining and diversified manufacturing industries; Its port is Callao.

Transferred to the Sheraton Hotel & Casino. At this time our group has been dwindled to 18 including the Tour Director.

After a little time to relax we went off to explorung Lima on the city tour. A gudied tour showcased the capital's colonial heritage. Visited the 11th century San Francisco Monastery with its unique cloisters. The Government Palace (only outside) and the Cathedral both in the Plaza de Amas.  A shorrt drive of the city to view the residential areas of San Isidro and Miraflores.

April 05, 1995 - 1 day visit to Cuzco. Leaving Lima via Aero Peru Airlines and arriving at Cuzco.

A scenic morning flight to Cuzco, the fascinating Andean City, once the center of the mighty INCA Empire was very much enjoyable. On arrival to Hotel Libertador, we took rest. Rest in the words SLEPT & DRANK Cocoa Tea throughout the day to help us adjust to the 11,000 feet altitude. We departed for the sight-seeing of Cuzco and its numerous ruins.

Visited the imposing Cathedral, the Santo Domingo Monastery. The near by Inca Baths of Tambomachay and the semi circular Keno Amphitheater with its stone alters and labyrinth of passages, the ancient site of Puca Pucara and the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, perched on a hillside overlooking Cuzco. It still remains unfathomable how and when this fortress of gigantic stones with some blocks measuring more than 350 tons was ever built. Dinner with entertainment in the hotel banquet hall.

06 April, 1995: The Magical Machu Pichu Tour. After breakfast departed for the first part of our journey to Magical Machu Pichu by bus to the Train Station at Holland where we boarded the train for the final scenic ride to Mystical Machu Pichu.

MACHU PICHU is a fortress citadel created by the strategist of the Incas. It formed part of a defence system. The buildings were constructed on the craggy slopes extending to the base of Machu Pichu mountain. There are different levels of construction. The buildings, as if by magic, rest upon a small surface area of the terraces. In the mystery of its architecture, MachuPichu is a perfect expression of Andean man who conceived it.

Train Journey: The train zigzags its way through the lush Urubamba Valley. Then by coach we travelled for the last ascent to this sacred refuge. perched high above steep valley coated in thick tropical jungle. The guide recounted many accomplishements of this once eminent people as we toured the Ruils of Towers: SUN TOWER-noteworthy for its mystery-temples, a mausoleum, a prison and ceremonial baths.

About Incas: The Incas made no use of the wheel for transportation and they had no writng. But relay runners carrying messages in the form of knotted cords could reach anywhere in the empire within a week. The peasants were drafted in their thousands to terrace the steep hillsides and to work on roads, irrigation schemes and temples. But the huge empire fell to the Spanish in 1530 after the conquistador, Francisco Pizarro kidnapped and killed the last Inca ATAHULPA. There ends the chapter of the Inca's empire. But the ruins still remain there to trumpet their glorious period to the world. We discovered the treasures of legendary Machu Pichu, "The Lost City of Incas".

After lunch at Machu Pichu Inn Hotel we took the bus back down the hill to the train and returned to the hotel.

April 07, 1995: Back to Lima from Cuzco. Leaving Cuzco via Aero Peru Airlines and arrived at Lima.

This day was free. Once again a solo tour for me to view the city. At night I gambled in the Casino in the hotel. Final Farewell Party was hosted by the Tour Director at the most beautiful and attractive seaside restaurant - La Rosa Nautica Restaurant in Lima.

April 08, 1995: Leaving Lima via Aero Peru Airlines and Arriving at Miami. Leaving Miami via American Airlines and arriving at Orlando. Reached home safely.

The citadel of Moscow, housing the offices of the Soviet Government. Originally built in the 12th century, destroyed and rebuilt many times. Enclosed in the Kremlin walls we saw the many exquisite palaces and cathedrals.

A tour to the Kremlin Armory showed us the riches of the pre-revolutionary Russia including Royal carriages, jewels, thrones, robes and more. After enjoying the 15th century Kremlin Museum visited the imposing Cathedral Square and went into one of the Cathedrals, the Annunciation and Assumption Cathedral where the Tzars (Russian Kings) were crowned.  Viewed the 40 ton Tsar Cannon cast in bronze in 1586 and the famous tombs of the Unknown Soldiers.

After lunch break our tour continued to see the Red Square, both historic and modern center of political changes. Covering over 70,000 square meters, it stretches out broadly against the eastern wall of the Kremlin. The Lenin Mausoleum dominates the center of the square. The tomb is built of dark granite and black labradorite. There is always a guard posted at the entrance. The architectural ensemble of Red Square was developed gradually over time.

Our eyes were attracted by the vividly painted onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedrals. From in construction 1555-61 St Basil's Cathedral was a project commissioned Ivan, the Terrible laying at the heart of the Red Square.  Next to the St. Basil's stands the Saviour Tower another symbol of Moscow.

A drive through showed us the new and old Moscow, Moscow State University, a city panorama from the Lenin Hills, Olympic Stadium, Novodevichy Convent and in the distance the Kremlin walls, Official quarters of the Prime Minister and others, Parliament of Congress, General Library, City Hall and Exhibition center.

That night we went on the optional excursion "Drive Boat" on the Moscow River where the folklore performances feasted our eyes and ears with cocktails and beverages (music & dances) for three hours.

St. PETERSBURG: Also known as Leningard--a city in the western USSR on the banks and delta islands of the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland. It is the USSR second largest metropolis and a leading seaport and commercial and industrial center. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as St. Petersburg.  It was built as a rival to the city of Venice, and hence the nickname "Venice of the North". It was the capital of Russia from 1772 until 1918.  From 1914 to 1924 it was called Petrograd. The city was laid out on classical lines by French and Italian architects. Its central thoroughfare is the clebrated Nevsky Prospect. The city is also the city of the famous Hermitage Museum.

He also founded the Russian navy and reformed the administration of the State.

City Tour: Travelled along Nevskey Prospect,  the city's most elegant boulevard which is lined with palaces, mansions, new shops and famous restaurants. Saw the famous & majestic Bronze Horseman Statue of Peter the Great (Landmark of the city). We witnessed the Admiralty and Kazan Cathedral. We stopped at the Church of the Spilled Blood, a large brightly painted, multi-domed structure, whose beauty belies the name, "Spilled Blood". Its reflection on the Neva River is amazingly wonderful to look at.

In the afternoon we participated in a unique program, "Treat A Friend" that allowed us an opportunity to meet the Russian Nursery School Children. We talked with the children and danced with them and gained an insight into their world. Mrs. Kamalam took a keen interst in dancing with the children and everyone of us appreciated her interest very much. I bought gifts to the children worth about $100/- and I distributed to them. My gifts were more attractive and valuables and those of my co-travellers. The Principal of the school was highly pleased and delighted and spoke high of me for my generous gifts. She took pictures with me and thanked once again with shedding tears of joy.

At night we attended another Folklore Performances in one of the famous theatres in Russia, the Puskin Theatre.

Oct 6, 1994: Our tour started with a visit to Peter,  the Great's Summer Palace-- the Grand Palace. No words are found to explain the beauty and the structure of the Palace-- everything embossed with gold. Really it is a grea, great grand palace. This night was a gala one. We attended the famous Russian Ballet in Chirpy Theatre (Opera & Ballet Theatre) now known as the Marinsky Theatre.

Oct 7, 1994: Visited the famous Hermitage Museum. One of the largest in the world, the museum boasts masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso and Giorgione among others. The museum is located in a splendid ensemble of buildings in Palace Square. The prinicipal building the Winter Palace of Catherine, wife of Peter the Great. The main attraction is the lavish, glided building itself. It is an outstanding example of Russian Baroque architecture. With over 2 million art and history exhibits displayed in the halls and galleries that are themselves masterpieces that is most definitely one of the world's finest museum. We explored the rooms in the Winter Palace where Russian royalty lived not too long ago.

Our next attraction was St. Issac's Cathedral with its golden dome towering 33 feet above impressive marble columns--erected between 1818 and 1858 -- famous for its glided dome and its interior decor. Its primary attraction is its mosaic reliefs and jeweled walls. St. Isaac's Cathedral stands 3rd in rank in the world for its grandeus after St. Peter's Cathedral in Italy and St Paul's Cathedral in London. On our way back we visited 900 War Memorial Monument and the Puskin Palace.

Farewell Party in the Hotel Banquet Hall. Our festive dinner with champagne, vodka, delicious dishes, music and dances lasted for 3 hours and ended in happy mood.

11. My Visit to Africa, July 22 to August 6, 1994 (16 days)

AFRICA -  THE LESSONS OF EXPERIENCE ARE MORE CERTAIN THAN THOSE OF THE DOCTORS AND UNIVERSITIES.

Private tour to Egypt and Kenya. 16-days from July 22 to  August 6, 1994 with Kapali, Sheila & Siva.

AFRICA: The second largest continent after Asia, consisting mostly of high mountains, plateaus which drop dramatically to narrow coastal plains.  It has a very short coastal line for its area. It has few fold mountains. Africa's longest rivers are the Nile, Zaire (Congo) and Niger. It is one of the driest. The Sahara desert, the World's largest and harshest covers 25 percent of the total area.  Soils are often poor. Its strength lies in its vast and varies mineral resources. The asset is its remarkably varied wildlife, in many places preserved in national parks and game reserves.

July 22, 1994: Leaving Charlotte via US Air to New York JFK. Leaving New York JFK via Egypt Air to Cairo.

An unhappy incident at the airport. When we were passing though the immigration check up the officials granted visas to Kapali, Sheila and Siva as they were carrying American Passports, however I was not granted admission into the country since mine is an Indian passport. They said that I must obtain the visa in advance before embarking the flight. This was a sad incident. Kapali ran here and there meeting the officials for my visa. There was a huge crowd of passengers at that time. The officials had no time to attend my case. Kapali pleaded my case to the higher authority and at last he had granted the visa to me. It took more than one hour to obtain the visa. Then we entered Cairo and proceeded to the President Hotel, Cairo, for our night stay.

EGYPT: A country of north eastern Africa bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is mainly desert. The Greek historian Herodotus, said that Egypt was "the gift of the Nile". Along the river's narrow fertile strip the Egyptians built one of the World's earliest and greatest civilizations. It emerged about 300 B.C. Hieroglyphics, the early Egyptian system of writing. The Egyptians believed in an afterlife and preserve their dead for it, developed mummification. They buried the dead with possessions needed for their after life. The most remarkable Egyptian achievements were in architecture. They constructed Pyramids, tombs and temples that remain among the wonders of the World.

CAIRO: Capital of Egypt lying in the East bank of the Nile River. It is the largest city in Africa and one on the most important cultural, commercial and political centers of the Arab World. The pyramids at Giza, 13 Kilometers (8 Miles) southwest of Cairo and Egypt's many monuments and treasures ensure a busy tourist industry.

July 23, 1994: We engaged a taxi, went around the city and the banks of the Nile River. The Nile River in the north easters Africa, the longest in the World, 6700 Kilometers(4150 Miles) from its source in the highlands south of the Equator to its outlet on the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile is formed at Khartoum by the confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile. After enjoying the beautiful sceneries of the river and the metropolitan town we entered the one of the World's greatest, The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities where we discovered the World's richest collections of pharaonic treasures including Tutankhamen's baboon. Our special attractions were the mummies of the kings and queens exhibited there.

Trip to Giza to see pyramids: What is a Pyramid? A pyramid is a massive monument found especially in Egypt, having rectangular base and four triangular faces culminating in a single apex and serving as tombs and temples. We explored the Giza strip on the horses exploring all the pyramids, though it was a very hot day with a special guide engaged by us who explained the pyramids and other monuments.

The Great Pyramid at Giza: Built by more than 100,000 men in 20 years. One of the seven wonders of the ancient World, it was built by the 4th dynasty Pharaoh Khufu, also known as Cleops. It covers 13 acres and contains more than 2 million blocks of stone. It is 450 feet high still the world's largest stone edifice; the area of its base is sufficient to accomodate the Cathedrals of Milan, Florence and St. Peter's in Rome together with the Westminster Abbey and St. Pauls in London.

The Great Sphinx: The huge stone having a lion's body ad a man's head built by Khafre, Khufu's son.   The Sphinx is thought to be a likeness of Khafre and is the oldest known large-scale royal portrait. It is 240 feet long and 66 feet high at its head. This mythical creature the Egyptians believed guarded sacred sites.

The Stepped Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara was built in layers with each layer smaller than the one beneath. It measured 389 feet by 462 feet at its base and rose to a height of 204 feet. This pyramid may reflect its original spiritual purpose-- a staircase for the King to ascent to the heaven after death.

The three large pyramids at Giza are the tombs of Kings Menkaure, Khafre and Khufu. Besides these three, there are other smaller pyramids in the Giza Valley.

On our way back to Cairo we visited the Papyrus Institute and the Palm Carpet Factory and reached the Cairo Rail Station to board the train to Luxor-- 9 hours journey at night..

July 25, 1994. Reached Luxor. Town on the east bank of the Nile River in Central Egypt. It covers part of the site of the ancient city of Thebes, with great temple of Luxor. It was the old capital of Egypt.

Thebes: Town of ancient Egypt. It flourished from the mid 22nd to the 18th Century BC both as royal resident and as the center of the worship of the God Amen.

Karnak: Village in Central Egypt on the Nile River. It is the site of the ancient Thebes, with great Temple of Amen.

Luxor Temple: One of the great monuments of ancient Egypt. Built bu Amenhotep III. The king's statue is one of the most valuable single piece of sculpture ever to emerge from the soil of Egypt. The half-buried pylons, those giant heads raising in ghastly resurrection before the gates of the temple were magnificent. Beyond that entrance lay a smoky, filthy, intricate labyrinth of lanes and passages. The 65 feet tall colossi of Memnon located opposite to Luxor appear to float on the annual Nile River. We visited temples and monuments in a tourist coach. We had already arranged a cruise on the Nile River from Luxor and boarded the ship "Sherry Nile" (3 days and 2 nights). The Cruise started at 9:00 PM. Do you want me to explain the splendor and beauty of the cruise on the Nile River? Standing on the deck to look at the shining moon and the stars above the blue sky cast shadows on the glistening water, was a spectacular sight to behold !!

Our ship anchored at the Valley of the Kings and we went to visit it.Valley of the Kings:  Long narrow valley in Egypt, the site of ancient Thebes and now occupied by Luxor and Karnak. It is the site of at least 60 tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs of the 18th, 19th and 20th dynasties including the tomb of Tutankhamen- Egyptian Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty. His tomb with its magnificent contents was discovered almost intact (1922) by the British archaeologists Howard Carter and the Earl of Carnarvon.

We also visited the Valley of the Queens. In the valley of the queens many pharaoh's wives and princesses were buried. On returning to the ship we visited on Alabaster Factory.

Leaving Luxor reached Esna. Visited Abu Temples, trudging toward the 66-foot tall monoliths carved on cliff above the Nile. The two temples were built by Ramses II far up the river as a monument to himself and his favorite wife Nefertiti.

Aswan Dam: Not visited but enjoyed the sight of the magnificent structure of the dam while cruising on the Nile. The dam is 114 meters (375 feet) high and 3600 meters (11,800 feet) long. Its reservoir Lake Nasser, is one of the largest artificial lakes in the World.  Before reaching the dam the ship was raised by two locks, the purpose os which is to raise the water to the upper level of the river so that the ship could sail on. Visited the Esna Temple which is 30 meters below the ground level. Night halt in the ship at Edfu.

Visited Edfu -- The city was begun in 237 BC. Visited the famous Edfu Temple of Horus. It is considered  to be the most beautiful of the Egypt Temples. The guide told the tales of the legendary battle took place centuries ago. The outer court of the Temple records the pillars still un-excavated with Egyptians living in Porticoes and conversing in the court yard. Cruised from Edfu to Kom--ombo. Visited Kom-ombo Temple which once served as a storage for gold and other immaculate treasures of the god-like Pharaohs. Our Cruise journey was ended and we boarded the train at Kom-ombo to Cairo as before in the night train of 9 hours journey. In the train there was a small incident. At the counter in the Kom-ombo rail station the clerk issued a wrong ticket to Sheila. The ticket examiner in the train demanded excess fees for the ticket. But as usual Kapali objected the demand and met the higher authority who overruled the demand. We reached the Cairo Rail Station early in the morning safely.

Visited Alexandria: Egypt's leading port, standing at the western tip of the Nile River on the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded by the Alexander the Great, in 322 BC and became famous for its two royal libraries. Its pharos (light house) was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. We engaged a taxi and visited the Alexandria City. Toured Pompey's Pillar, Roman Amphitheater, swimming in the Alexandria Bay, where Cleopatra, once ruled as Queen of the Nile, with her alluring eyes which adorned the regal golden throne sailing in her snake boats drawn by swans. Smoked ookka in a restaurant overlooking the Marina. Left Alexandria and reached the Cairo Airport.

July 29, 1994: Leaving Cairo Airport via Egypt Air to Nairobi, Kenya. Arriving Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, Kenya.

KENYA: East African republic lying across the Equator. The fertile southwest highlands are Africa's major source of coffee and tea. Tourism is a major industry. Kenya was proclaimed British Colony in 1920. The savage Mau Mau rebellion of the Kikuyu hastened independence under Jomo Kenyatta and stability prosperity ensued. Kenya is one of the most popular African countries to visit due to its scenic beauty as well as abundence and variety of game animals.

NAIROBI: The capital of Kenya. Founded (1899) on the Mombasa-Uganda railway, it lies in Kenya's eastern highlands. It is a major industrial and commercial center and is also one of Africa's chief tourist centers attracting visitors to the Nairobi National Park, a wildlife preserve on the city's outskirts.

Rented a car from Avis and travelled throughout Kenya. When we were traveling on Meru and Embu ROad we passed the imaginary Equator passes Line and took pictures before the billboard indicating the line. Night halt at the Meru Country Hotel.

July 30, 1994: Our safaris began from the Meru National Park. On the way we visited Mara Village Market. Passing through the Meru National Park we saw elephants, buffaloes, Zebras, deer, antelopes etc. Night halt in Mulika Lodge in the National Park.

Our Next visit to Nyahururu Lake -- home to literally thousands of beautiful pink flamingos in the Nakuru National Park. Lake Manyara National Park. Lake Manyara is situated in the Great Rift Valley. Enjoyed the wildlife in particular the many species of water fowl, including ducks, pelicans and flamingos that inhabit the area around the lake. Here a small problem. Our car was plunged into muddy filthy soil. The car was not moving. The Park Guard came to our rescue. We tried to lift the car. But failed. Then the guard went in his jeep and brought 10 or 12 men in a truck and they lifted the car. We thanked them and gave $30/- as tips. Night halt in Serena Lodge in the Marai Mara National Park.

Marai Mara: Is an extension of the great Seregeti Plain and is generally thought to be the most significant game viewing spot in Kenya. We started our safari very early in the morning so that we could see more animals. We saw giraffes, zebras, elephants and a host of other wildlife as they exist in their natural habitat.

Visited "Thomas Waterfalls" the highest Waterfalls in Africa in Nyahururu -- 30 meter high falls. Night halt in Thomas Falls Lodge. In the lodge I met with an accident. When I took my shower early morning, I poured the hottest water on my head accidentally which burned my head and forehead. Kapali took me to a nearby Nursing Home where the Nurse applied some ointment in the forehead and put a bandage on the wounds.

August 1st 1994: Leaving Nyakururu to Nakuru National Park. After visiting the Nakuru Park we were proceeding to Mombasa.

Flat Tire Problems: When we were driving on the freeway at night, one of the back wheel tires got flat. While we were fixing the tire the Patrol police came and helped us. We went about ten miles and  Oh.. My God.. another tire gone flat. We had no spare tire. We were blinking and standing on the road without knowing what to do. Fortunately two newspapers trucks were passing by. They stopped their trucks and came to our help.  In one truck me and Siva with our baggages, to avert the theft of the luggages and in the other Kapali and Sheila with two flat tires were driven to the nearest gas station. They unloaded the luggages and went away wishing us a happy journey.  Siva and me were sitting in a tea hotel at the gas station with the luggages and Kapali and Sheila repaired the tires, went back to the car and returned to the gas station.  It took more than eight hours to recover from the hurdles. Then we reached Mombasa and stayed for 2 days in Kenya Beach Hotel at Mombasa Beach.

MOMBASA: Sea Port and industrial center of Kenya. It is the country's chief port and also handle trade for Uganda and Tanzania. Spent 2 days in Mombasa. Sight seeing, city tour, walking and playing on the beach, swimming in the sea and hotel pools and taking rest.

August 3, 1994.  Leaving Mombasa, reached Tsawo National Park. According to the rules of this park nobody was allowed to drive themselves without the convoy. A convoy should accompany in the car with a gun to take care of the visitors from the attacks by the native people. So a convoy escorted us. Again one tire gone flat. This time the convoy helped us. The roads in the parks are only laid with gravel and stones. No black top or smooth leveling to keep the natural environments for the animals to cross or walk on the roads. Reached Amboseli Lake. Night halt in O.L.Tukai Lodge.

August 4, 1994: Amboseli National Park is the perfect viewing point of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountains. The safari was better than the other safaris. We saw more elephants, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, leopards and rhinos. A herd of elephants composed of seven members was just crossing the road in front of us. We stopped the car and got down to take picture. The Park Guard in his jeep came running behind us and warned us not to step down from the car while travelling the park, which is against the rule of the Park. After enjoying safaris reached Nairobi. We had our dinner in Minar Hotel, the famous hotel in Nairobi.

August 5, 1994: Leaving Nairobi to Cairo via the Egypt Air and reached Cairo by 5:00 PM. Once again the visa problems to me. But this time I was treated as a transit passenger and given free boarding and lodging in the Airport Hotel itself. It was a blessing in disguise to me since I had enough time to take complete rest in the hotel room. Kapali, Sheila and Siva went out and stayedn in a hotel for the night. The next day they strolled again on the streets of Cairo to view the city and came back to the Airport at night.

August 6, 1994:  We boarded the Egypt Air, left Cairo to New York and from La Guardia Airport to Charlotte. We reached home safely.

Though we had many problems, incidents and accidents which were thwarted by Kapali's efforts, ability and capability, we enjoyed the whole trip to the most.

10. My Visit to Hawaii, August 11 - 25, 1993 for 15 days

HAWAII  BEFORE BECOMING TOO OLD FIND ABOARD THE GOLD !!

ALOHA !!

Package tour to Hawaii for 15 days from August 11, 1993 to August 25, 1993. Tour covers four islands Oahu, Kauai, Maui and Hawaii.

HAWAII: Formerly Sandwich Islands. A group of islands in the North Pacific, in 1959 it became the 50th state of the Union (United States). Hawaii comprises more than 20 beautiful and intriguing volcanic islands, including Maui, Oahu, Kauai and Hawaii. Since Captain James Cook's discovery of these islands (1778) the population and culture have become a mix of European, Oriental and Polynesian. Its economy depends on tourism. The lure of Hawaii is irresistible. Its tropical flavor is unparalleled. It is the Pacific Paradise.

August 11, 1993: Leaving Charlotte via Delta Airlines 9:45 AM and Arriving at Atlanta. Leaving Atlanta via Delta Airlines 12:00 noon and arriving at Honolulu, Oahu.

OAHU: the Gathering Place. Oahu is the spectacular capital island, home to Honolulu. It is the third largest island of the state of Hawaii in the North Pacific. It is also the most populous and highly developed of the islands. The important US military installations on the island includes Pearl Harbor. It embodies the exotic flavor and flair of Hawaii.

HONOLULU: Capital of the State of Hawaii on the island of Oahu. It is a crossroads transport, trade and tourism as well as the economic and commercial center of this tropical paradise.

On arrival at the Honolulu Airport, greeted by a Hawaiian damsel who honored me with a lei garland. I was then transferred to the Maile Sky Court Hotel (3 nights) at Honolulu. After dinner at the hotel, strolled on the endless, sun drenched beaches of Waikiki. From the littering lights and excitement of Waikiki to the serenity of the quiet beach, Oahu is a beautiful piece of paradise. Next morning, breakfast and orientation in Queen Kapiolani Hotel, Waikiki. After the orientation the city tour started. Visited Coral Jewelry Factory, Garments Factory, and downtown. Evening tour to Paradise Cove, Luai. Tasted Hawaiian Alcohol and Polynesia Luau dinner which was followed by a three hour long Polynesian dancing ceremony which exhibited the true pageantry of this island state. Next morning to USS Arizona Memorial Monument at Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor:  Inlet of the Pacific Ocean in Oahu Island. Site of US Naval base, it was the object of a surprise attack by the Japanese Air Force on October 7, 1941 that precipitated the United States into World War II. We embarked on a steam boat which took us to the USS Arizona Memorial, where we witnessed one of the saddest chapters in American History. Once a proud flagship in the US Navy, the USS Arizona now stands as a dilapidated submerged structure which will always be a reminder of the ruthless Japanese raid of Pearl Harbor.

Later that afternoon we visited the International Market and other shopping districts in the city. At night visited the Polynesian Cultural Center for a historical overview of Hawaii and the people who first discovered it. At night I attended a Polynesia Luai dinner in the Polynesia Hut with a Singaporean couple, who like myself came to experience exotic majesty of the island. The cocktail party and Polynesian Show lasted for three hours.

August 14, 1993: Leaving Oahu via Hawaiian Airlines to Luhue Airport, Kauai.

KAUAI: the Garden Isle: In Kauai there is a greater variety if native vegetation and magnificent tropical scenery.

Arrived at the Airport Kauai. Greeted by yet another Hawaiian beauty with a lei garland. Toud started from the airport itself. Enjoyed the Wailua River Cruise at Fern Grotto up the Wailua River. Visited the Rain Folk Water Falls and dilapidated King's palace. Transferred to the Hotel Islander on The Beach, at Kapaa (3 nights). After taking sea-bath enjoyed a blissful rest.

Solo tour in the free bus. The Travel Agencies are operating buses free of cost to the visitors in the island connecting important and shopping centers to encourage tourism. Visited the Luhue Airport, shopping centers and a church in the residential area. Next day to Princeville through sylvan surroundings and visited the Princeville neighbourhood and the status of Captain James Cook in the midst of the beautiful fountain. Went round through Kapaa, Kolaa and Kannappapaee villages and lastly visited the Waimia Canyon (like Gran Canyon in Arizona). Participated in the bar-party and then to bed.

August 17, 1993: Leaving Kauai to Maui vai Hawaiian Airlines.

Greeted at the Kakuli Airport, Maui and transferred to Maui Sea Side Hotel, Maui (3 nights)

MAUI: The Valley Isle: Maui has a magic all its own. The second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Many say "Maui is the best". Maui is home to Lahina, Once the royal seat for Hawaii's ancient rulers, the historic town became the world capital of whaling by the 1840s. Maui consists of two mountainous masses. Its economy is based on mainly sugarcane and pineapples.

This time the Tour Manager arranged a Motor Coach. We touredi n the coach to Iao Valley -- Heritage Village of Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Native Indians. Driven to the amazing 19,000 foot summit of the dormant volcanic Haleakala looms high over Maui and offers breathtaking Panoramic views of the islands. The Needle Peak, Kennedy Face Profile, Waterfalls and mountain rivulets are the attractive pieces. Lunch in Plantation Resort Hotel. Tour continued to the Whaling Port white water sea-shore at Lahania. Visited the port, shopping centers, Jail and Flea markets and returned to the Hotel. Next day solo walking tour around the city-- Visited Wharf, Port of Kakului and shopping centers.

August 20, 1993: Leaving Maui and arriving at Hilo Airport, Hawaii. Greeted at the Airport.

HAWAII: The Big Island. Captain James Cook discovered Hawaii in 1778. Over 4000 square miles of wonder and romance, almost twice the area of the other Hawaiian islands combined. This is the land of exotic beauty and drama, serenity and excitement, coffee plantations and cattle ranches, misty rain forests and parched deserts.

This tour was a non-flight segment from Hilo to Kona that is from west coast to East coast. Hilo on the windward or wet side is a lush tropical town where wild orchids and beautiful red anthuriums thrive in the abundant rains.

Boarded into an air-conditioned motor coach, driven through Banyan Tree Drive,  Harbor, Sea Shore and through University complex where a myriads of damsels (University teenage girls) wearing variety of colorful and shining mini-skirts and shorts and shorts and skirts, walking, chanting and playing like butterflies in that area, really a feast to the eyes. We were not allowed to alight from the bus to enjoy the beauty but we watched the scene in great awe.

Visited Rainbow waterfalls and Macadamia Nuts Factory at Mauna Loa. We witnessed the processing how the nuts made into Chocolate and also tasted some free samples. Visited Akashu Orchid Gardens full of beautiful flowers and attractive plants. On the way visited the Volcano Winery and tasted various wines. An exciting walk through Tube Tunnel, caused by volcano was a thrilling one.

Twin Volcanic peaks, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa each soaring more than 12000 feet into the sky are the highest points in the State. Mauna Loa is still active and delights us at a distance with its spontaneous eruptions of fiery red Lava that spew like a fountain up through the sea from underneath volcanic tubes.

Visited Paualui Crater at Kilemau Calders which is beautiful, attractive and at the sametime horrible to look at. Kilauea eruption took place in 1979 -- Kalemau eruption in 1982. It almost seems the lava is still flowing. Molten Lava enters the sea and makes the sea and sands black at Punalua. The whole Kalapana area was destroyed by the volcanic eruptions. The people believe that the PELE, the volcanic Goddess, was angry with the people of that area and destroyed their homes and belongings. Still the city of Hilo is under the threat of eruption of volcanoes at any time. Visited the National Park Service Center and Thomas A Jaggar Museum-- Sulphur pit near the Museum still emitting smokes. On the way swimming in Black Sands Beach, Punalua. Visited Kona Coffee Stores, tasted the Kona Coffee and reached Kona Sea Side Hotel, Kona ( 4 nights).

August 21, 1993: KONA: Tour to USS/CUSHING DD 985/ War Ship. One day free tour to the ship. The ship was anchored in Kailua Bay, Kona. After visiting the ship back to the hotel, surprisingly saw the road sign PALANI Road at the Kailua Bay Junction. Palani Road is one of the main thoroughfare in the Kona CIty. Visited the Palani Court Complex on the road. Attended Elks Club's Entertainment and dinner at Hale Halawai Recreation Club. Next day breakfast in Waterfront Row Hotel. Night Polynesia Luau Dinner in Hilton Resort Hotel, Kona.

On August 23, 1993, attended the International Bill Fish Tournament held in Kailua Bay. The fish caught weighing 534 lbs got the prize. The man, who won the prize, asked  me to lift the tail of the fish. I tried with all my strength, however the animal was so massive I was not able to move even the tip of its tail. Took rest for the next day early flight to Honolulu.

Aug 24, 1993: Leaving Kona Airport vai Hawaiian Airlines to Honolulu.

Aug 25, 1993: Leaving Honolulu to Atlanta and from Atlanta to Charlotte.  Reached Home Safely.

MAHALO !!!!

09. My Visit to Japan and China - May 13, 1992 to May 28, 1992 (16 days)

Japan and China - Travel is a very good survival mechanism to keep your spirits up, avoiding the negative, and keeping up the positive.

Trip to Japan and China from May 13, 1992 to May 28, 1992 (16 days).  Escorted tour conducted by TBI Tours

May 13, 1992. Leaving Orlando via US Air Arrived at Philadelphia.
Leaving Philadelphia and Arrived at New Yok JFK.
Leaving New York JFK Airport via Japan Airlines.
Crossed the International Date Line and arrived at Narita Airport, Tokyo.

May 14, 1992 - Greeted by the Tour Manager at the Airport and transferred to Shiba Park Hotel, Tokyo (3 nights).

JAPAN: Japan is an island country in the North Pacific Ocean. It lies off the northeast coast of mainland Asia and faces the Soviet Union, Korea and China. Four large islands and thousands of smaller ones make up Japan. The four major islands -- Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shokoku -- form a curve that extends for about 1200 miles (1900 Kilometers). About 123 million people are crowded in these islands making Japan one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The Japanese call their country Nipon or Nihon which means source of the Sun. The name Japan may have come from Zipangu, the Italian name given to the country by Marco Polo. Mountains and hills cover most of Japan, making it a country of great beauty. Japan's big cities are busy, modern centers of culture, commerce and industry. The Japanese manufacture a wide variety of products including automobiles, computers, iron and steel, plastics, radios and television sets. Life in Japan reflects the culture of both the East and the West. At various times in Japan's history emperors held great power. However the 1947 Constitution states "the Emperor shall be the symbol of the State". The Emperor's duties are therefore entirely ceremonial. He inherits the throne.

TOKYO: Capital of Japan and one of the World's largest cities. Tokyo is located in East-Central Honshu, at the head of Tokyo Bay- founded on 12th Century Village of Edo. Its Sea-port is Yokohama.

May 15, 1992. Morning sight seeing tour. Visited the Imperial Palace Plaza,Meiji-Jingu (Meiji Shrine), Asakusa Kannon Temple, Nakamise shopping arcade and returned to the Hotel. Next at leisure. During the night I strolled around the downtown area.

May 16, 1992: Toured to Toshogu Shrine in Nikko in the morning. In the afternoon my relatives Mr. Sasi and his wife Mrs. Uma came to the hotel and took me to their home in Yokohama. We traveled in the Metro train, the fastest train in the World, to Yokohama. It was an exhilarating experience which I thoroughly enjoyed. On the way I sampled a Japanese dish known as Sushi. Although this fare consisting of raw fish or snake rapped in rice may not sound appealing, in actuality however, it is very pleasing to the Palate. After finishing the meal in their house, Kannan and Vivek, their sons, took me back to the Shiba Park Hotel.

May 17, 1992: Departed from Tokyo to Nanyuan Airport, Beijing, China.

CHINA: Official name is People's Republic of China. The World's most populous and third largest country in East Asia. Three great rivers, the Huang, the Chang Jiang and the Xi-Jiang. A form of writing was in use in China from 1525 B.C.  After World War II, a civilian war (1946 - 1949) established the People's Republic of China under chairman Mao Ze-dong. Mao launched the Cultural Revolution (1966). China made great strides in modernization and social and economic development. In 1971 China was admitted to the United Nations. It is one of the five members who possess veto powers in the Security Council in the United Nations Organization. There are over 20 cities in China with more than a million inhabitants each.

BEIJING (Peking): Capital and second largest city in China. It is a major cultural, commercial, communications and industrial center.  Founded by the Zhou as a frontier town on the North China Plain. In it is preserved the Inner or Tatar City containing the Imperial or Forbidden City.

On arrival at the Airport, greeted and transferred to Beijing Toronto Hotel, Beijing. Rest of the day was free. Went around the hotel to view the city and night stroll along the city streets.

May 18, 1992: Sight seeing. Visited the Forbidden City, not inside though, Tienanmen Square and the Summer Palace.
KPPillai with Sri RVenkataraman, President of India Xian City, China, May 22nd 1992

May 19, 1992: Excursion to the Great Wall, the only man made object visible from the Moon.

Great Wall of China: A fortification cosisting wall, watch towers and guard stations extending 2400 Kilometers (1500 miles) in a winding course across northern China from Gansu Province to Hebei Province. For most of its length it runs along the Southern border of the Mangolian Plain. It was built originally to keep out Nomadic invaders from the North and the continuous wall was built in the Third Century B.C. The average height of the wall is 7.5 meters (25 feet) and the average thickness at the base is 7 meters (23 feet) although at most points it tapers to a 3.5 meters (11 feet at the top).

I walked form the base to one of the watch-towers on the top. It tool 2 hours to me to reach the top on this winding course. Looking down from the tower was thrilling and exciting. On the way back to the photo center in the Great Wall, the camera man decorated me with the Chinese Monarch's royal regalia, the Crown, the Scepter, the tiaras and finery as the Chinese Monarch and made me sit on the throne and took a picture of me for $10/- I will always treasure this photograph.

In the evening visited another relic of ancient China, the Ming Tombs and returned to the Hotel.

May 20, 1992: Flew from Beijing to the ancient capital city of Xian. Arrived and transferred to the Xian Garden Hotel.

Xian: Formerly Chang-an. Capital of Shaanxi Province - North Western China, situated in the valley of the Weitto, it was the capital of the Qin Dynasty (225 - 206 BC) and at times of the Han and Tang dynasties.

May 21, 1992: Today's highlight was the visit to the tomb of China's First Emperor, guarded by thousands of Terra Cotta warriors, still under excavation, the tomb is an amazing sight (Terra Cotta: a hard brownish red to yellow waterproof material composes of Clay, fine sand and sometimes pulverized pottery waste usually unglazed, used in pottery and building construction).

A LUCKY DAY: After visiting this extra-ordinary tomb, we visited a Buddhist Temple in the City. A memorable and unforgettable incident happened to me. When we were returing from the Temple, there was an announcement through the  loud speaker, that the traffic was closed for 2 hours, as the President of India, Sri R. Venkataraman is visiting the temple. This announcement excited mem what luck to have an opportunity to see my President in the foreign land. When Sri Venkataraman, the President of India was passing to the temple with his wife, First Lady Smt. Janaki Venkataraman, I took many pictures of them. I wanted to go near them to have perfect angle for the picture, but the security men would not let me in. I was waiting at the entrance of the gate for another opportunity to take a picture. As the Presidential Party was returning, I greeted the President with a loud voice saying "VANAKKAM"  in Tamil meaning "Good Morning". When he heard the Tamil greetings, he at once saw me and made a signal to go over to him.  Seeing his signal now the security men rushed and took me to him. He blessed me and tapped on my shoulder and introduced me to the Chinese Minister and Buddhist Monks who accompanied him.  I shook hands with all of them. I greeted Mrs. Janaki with the same word Vanakkam. She was also so much pleased and inquired about my native place and other things. When I said, "My Native Place is Trichy" she at once exclaimed, "O, you are my neighbor" as she is from Tanjore, adjacent to Trichy. Then I went along the Presidential group for an hour. This was perhaps the most auspicious day in my many years. The camera and video men took so many pictures of me along with the President and Mrs. President. Don't you think this day an auspicious one for me?
KPPillai with Sri RVenkataraman, President of India Xian City, China, May 22nd 1992
Another Lucky Chance: After returning to America I wrote a letter to him thanking and requesting him to send a picture of him along with me. The President himself spared some time among his multi-farious activities and took so much pain to find a nice picture of mine along with him, since others did not know me. So he by himself selected a nice one. His Press Secretary mailed the picture by Certified Mail to me. I enlarged the picture and made each copy of my four sons' houses. Thanks to Mr and Mrs President.

May 22, 1992: Flew from Beijing to Shanghai.

Arrived and transferred to the Yangtse New World Hotel, Shangai.

SHANGAI: Largest City in China, lying within, but independent of the eastern province of Jaingu, on the Hunangpu River at its confluence with the Chang Jiang Estuary. One of the World's leading seaport, it is also the most important industrial, educational and cultural center of China.

07. My Visit to Singapore - Get in Touch with Good Things in Life

October 15 - 18, 1989 - 4 days in Singapore

Oct 14, 1989 leaving Los Angeles via Singapore Airlines to India en route Singapore.

Singapore: A Republic lying off the southern tip of Malay Peninsula, only 85 miles north of the equator. In addition to the mainland of Singapore it includes 60 smaller islands. A major commercial center with large shipping and ship building industry. Tourism is also important. Three quarters of the population are Chinese. It is a good looking city with many parks, trees and open green spaces. The skyscrapers are new and well designed. The airport and telecommunications are as good as America's best. You can dial from the airport to any local number at free of cost. Flogging is the cruelest punishment enforced even for the smallest offences. The death penalty for trafficking is loudly and swiftly. The streets are safe and clean. Beggars are rare and vagrants nonexistent. It has one of the highest standards of living in South East Asia. Virtually every citizen of the city is trying to scale Singapore of unequivocal prosperity. The local term for it is KIASUISM, roughly translated as "Me First".

October 15, 1989: Landed in Changai Airport, Singapore. My friend Janab H.M.Haniffa, a business man in Singapore, extended his cordial welcome at the airport and took me to his house. My whole stay was in his house. He is also an exporter and Importer in meat business. In the afternoon, I went with him to his office, "Haniffa Frozen Food Private Ltd.", in Jalanpasar Baru, Geylang, Singapore., There with one of his staff I explored the factory. The person explained me the cutting process of the meat and showed the cooler storage, retail shop and the auction place. Then we went around the localities to view the city.

October 16, 1989: Today, Janab Haniffa spared his car for a sight seeing excursion. The driver was more or less a tour guide. He showed me so many places and explained everything. First he took me to Mt. Faber. I viewed the panoramic view of the metropolis and the port. Visited Jurong Bird Parks' Swan Lake and Crocodile Park - impeccably landscaped 50 acre of aviary, with some 8000 birds, representing 600 species -- admired the Macaws, Penguins and Flamingos. We walked to the Chinese and the Japanese gardens there. The Chinese Garden features herb, bonsai and fragrant gardens and lotus pond. After crossing the 200 foot bridge reached the Japanes Garden. Next to the Singapore Science Center, accalaimed for its creative, hands-on introduction to all types of scientific phenomena. the exhibits demystify common sense puzzles. Visited the reservoir which provides the island inhabitants with a good supply of fresh water. Singapore however is still importing water from other countries for its use. Went through the Grand Central Boulevard, Orchard Road, famouse fo its pricey boutiques, crowded with high style shopping districts. Explored the Stamford Hotel, the very famous hotel in Singapore, with more than 1250 rooms crammed with very techno-convenience, the world's tallest hotel and crowned by the panoramic Compass Rose Restaurant.

October 17, 1989: After taking breakfast in one of his three hotels owned by Janab Haniffa, the tour started with the same driver. Visited Little India, known locally as Serangoon. There is no mistaking the sights, sounds and scents characterize this urban neighbourhood as Indian. In Little India I encountered more spice shops, saree purveyours and Indian Gold Jewelry stores. A very busy ethnic shopping district. Vistedthe holy Mariamman and Srinivasa Perumal temples in the south Indian styles.

Visited the China Town. China Town's old buildings marry the city's past to its present. Most are two and three storeyed shop houses built in a crazy quilt of styles over 150 years span, now restored and renovated in cheerful pastel shades. Much of this area, now home to everything from herbal tea-shops to fortune tellers.

At night Janab Haniffa took me to the famous Andhra Curry Restaurant located in Little India, which had 12 dishes on the menu, all served on the banana leaves and I relished the delicious food and ate a full stomach.

October 18, 1989: The day of departure arrived. Janab Haniffa himself took me to the airport and bid a bon-voyage to me. He left to hus homa and I flew to Anna Internation Airport, Madras. Reached home safely from Madras to Thillai Nagar, Trichy.

Though the Singapore tour was swift and hectic, yet without spending a single cent from my pocket, I enjoyed the trip very splendidly and lavishly. Thanks to my friends who made my trip fun and enjoying.
